“Fashion fades, style is eternal.”

While there’s nothing wrong with craving (and in some cases caving in and buying) the latest trends there are some definite basics that every Diva (and Diva in training) should own. While I’m sure that some are already staples in your wardrobe there are definitely others that you’ll want to buy. These are the bare necessities.

The button down white shirt

This classic piece is perfect for work with a demure skirt or some well tailored trousers. Couple it with a pair of skinny jeans and a pair of sleek shoes though and you’ll look luscious at a low key brunch.

When buying: You want to be sure that this piece fits well and is pre-shrunk so that are aren’t any unpleasant surprises after the first laundering. Make sure that all of the buttons close securely and that while fitted to your form it isn’t in any way tight. Try to go for a natural fabric like cotton which will wear well and has a long life.

The little black dress

A little black dress is key in any woman’s wardrobe and can be worn everywhere from a cocktail party to a funeral. For a classic look ala Audrey Hepburn pair it with a strand of pearls and a plain pair of black pumps. To go for a more modern look match it with a bright stiletto and some bangle bracelets.

When buying: Select a material which breathes well, preferably a more natural fabric which is well made. You want something that lays in a flattering manner which means no bunching when you sit and it should lay flat when you stand. Select something that lies just above or just below the knee in a simple silhouette without embellishment so as not to date the garment.

A well fitting pair of jeans

Every woman has a style of jeans she prefers. Irregardless of whether you love them low rise or like them skinny you should have at least one pair that fits like a dream. On a lazy fall Sunday wear them with your favorite sweater or slide into them along with some sexy heels and a hot little tank top for a spring night out. In the winter they'll wear well with a turtleneck and boots and they can even make an appearance in the early summer with crisp tee and some flip flops.

When buying: Go for quality over quantity and make sure the materials are sturdy. Try a spandex and cotton blend which will be sure to stretch and move with you. If they feel too tight buy the next half size up.

A pair of basic black pumps

These shoes can be strutted in up and down office halls and are equally in place at a posh new restaurant. For work they look good paired with pencil skirts and sweater sets and for something more seductive sling them on with a cocktail dress.

When buying: You want to be sure that the heel height is a practical one, something around two to three inches is probably ideal. Also look for a versatile material along the lines of man made leather as opposed to something more specific like an animal embossing.

A pair of “I have to have them just because I want them” shoes

This item may seem contrary when you’re considering basics however  indulging in one pair of amazing and outlandish shoes can help to satiate a constant shoe craving. Since you’re only allowed one such purchase take your time and savor it not simply settling for the first set you see.

When buying: While they must be fabulous they must also be functional on a certain level. While you don’t need to be able to run a marathon in them you should be able to walk at least two Manhattan blocks in them (without stopping to wince in pain). Also be sure that you’ve got something to go with them as you don’t want them to end up collecting dust in the back of your closet.

A good bra

I recently learned that over 50% of women are wearing the wrong sized bra and for that you might as well go without one since you’re not being offered adequate support. The right undergarments can make or break and outfit so splurge on this and get more than one once you find something perfect.

When buying: Make sure that the bra is secure and snug and if you’re not sure of your size than allow yourself to be measured (I know for a fact that Victoria’s secret” does this). The straps shouldn’t dig into your skin, the underwire should lay flat against your rib cage and nothing should hang out of the cup. Also it should fit comfortably when secured on the middle latch, this way if you gain or lose weight you won't need to immediately rush out and buy new bras.

Flirty lingerie

Feeling sexy is a big part of actually being sexy and sometimes we all need a little boost. Every woman should own something silky and soft to slip into whether it’s a naughty little nightgown or a pair of barely there panties.

When buying: Remember that this piece doesn’t have to be practical but it should be something you feel passionate about and in.

A handbag you love

Whether you prefer a trendy tote or a small duffel every woman  should have at least one functional handbag that she owns.

When buying: Look for something in a color that matches the majority of your wardrobe, for most something in a brown or black will work best. Also be sure to go for a durable (as in waterproof) material which can realistically hold the items you just have to have on a daily basis.

A well fitting white tee

When worn under a blazer it’s perfect for casual Friday. Coupled with flip flops and sweats it’s a sweet little lounging outfit without any fuss.

When buying: Look for something fitted that doesn’t fall more than two inches above or below your waist. You’ll want either a cotton or a cotton blend and be sure it’s pre-shrunk.
